What Affects HGV Resale Value
The factors that actually move the price.
Kilometres — but not the way you think
Mileage matters, but it's rarely the number that sets the price. A 700k truck with full service history, one fleet owner and clean maintenance records often outsells a 400k truck from a struggling operator. Buyers look at how the kilometres were put on, not just how many.
Spec and Euro standard
Euro 6 still commands a clear premium on UK work. Euro 5 drops in value on domestic work but holds up well in export. Gearbox type, cab spec, rear axle ratio, fridge vs curtainsider vs tipper body — all shift the number.
Condition and presentation
A clean truck with a fresh MOT, tidy cab and photos that show it looked after puts more money on the table. First impression sets buyer expectation before numbers come out.
Timing and market
Fleet disposal patterns, fuel costs, operator confidence — all push used prices up or down through the year. Spring and autumn tend to be stronger. End of Q4 softer. Selling into a quiet market means taking less.
Route to sale
Auction vs direct sale vs part-exchange all produce different numbers for the same truck. Auction takes fees off the top. Direct sale skips the middlemen. Part-ex gets absorbed into new-truck margin. Know what you're comparing.
