How To Sell A Volvo FH Tractor Unit
A practical guide for fleet operators and owner-drivers.
Selling a Volvo FH is usually straightforward — but getting the right price depends on understanding how the market actually looks at the truck.
This guide covers what affects value, how different selling routes compare, and what to expect when you go to market.
We buy Volvo FH units across the UK — running or non-running. Send photos on WhatsApp and we’ll come back with a straight offer.
What Affects the Value of a Volvo FH
The Volvo FH has one of the strongest resale markets in the UK, but price still comes down to a few key things.
Generation and spec
FH4 (2012–2020) and FH5 (2021 onwards) dominate the current market. FH5 with I-Save and updated cab sits at the top. I-Shift is now expected — trucks without it are harder to place.
Kilometres
A long-haul FH will typically cover 150,000–200,000 km per year. Higher kilometres don’t stop a sale, but they do change where the truck sits in the market.
Cab type
Globetrotter XL commands the strongest demand. Day cabs are a different buyer profile. Extras like a fridge and working air-con still matter.
Euro standard
Euro 6 remains the strongest in the UK due to emissions rules. Euro 5 units still sell, particularly for export or specific work.
Condition
General condition still plays a role — but it doesn’t stop a deal. Clean trucks achieve stronger prices. Trucks with faults still sell every day at the right level.
DPF, AdBlue or engine issues don’t kill a sale — they’re just part of the number.
Auction vs Direct Sale — What’s the Difference?
Most FH units are sold either through auction or directly to a buyer.
Auction
The final price depends on who turns up on the day, catalogue position, and how many similar trucks are in the sale. Seller fees typically run £200–£400 per truck, and payment usually takes 2–3 weeks. There’s also the risk of the truck not meeting reserve and coming back unsold.
Direct sale
A direct buyer agrees a price upfront. No catalogue, no waiting for the room, and no seller fees. The better buyers will collect from your site and pay on the day.
For clean fleet trucks, both routes can work. For higher kilometre units, non-runners, or trucks with issues, direct sale is often the more straightforward option.
